Dr. Thangjam Dhabali Singh is the Chairman and Managing Director of the BABINA Group of Companies. He is a Pathologist by profession and was a teaching faculty member of the reputed Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. He voluntarily retired from service when he was serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, RIMS, to work as a full-time Laboratory Director of BABINA Diagnostics (formerly BABINA Diagnostic Centre). With his dynamism and visionary ideas, the BABINA Group has become one of the most reputed brands in the region.

Healthcare units of the group

BABINA Diagnostics, the flagship division of the group, is a premier provider of medical diagnostic services in Northeast India. It is a recognised name and stands as one of the most trusted brands in healthcare within this region. For a medical diagnostic centre located in a small state such as Manipur in Northeast India, BABINA Diagnostics has achieved significant progress since its inception by Dr. Th. Dhabali Singh in Imphal in 1983. At that time, the concept of medical diagnostics was relatively novel in the country, and in Manipur, it was virtually absent. BABINA Diagnostics (known initially as BABINA Diagnostic Centre) was the first laboratory in the state managed by a Pathologist. By the early 1990s, it had established a reputation synonymous with quality, which has become its unique selling proposition over the years. The centre, initially a modest clinical laboratory offering fundamental investigations, has now developed into a comprehensive diagnostic facility providing a broad spectrum of routine and advanced tests, in addition to radiological and other investigations.

The first laboratory in the Northeast to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), the centre is a well-established entity in the region, renowned for its steadfast commitment to providing prompt, comprehensive, accurate, and dependable diagnostic services. BABINA Diagnostics operates at two distinct locations: one on RIMS Road, Imphal West, and the other, the newer facility, at Soibam Leikai, Imphal East, which also functions as the primary laboratory. In terms of equipment and facilities, the diagnostic centre is the largest of its kind in Eastern India and undoubtedly one of the largest nationally. Its services are disseminated across the region through an extensive network of collection centres and joint venture units across various states of the Northeast and the neighbouring country, Myanmar.

BABINA Specialty Hospital, in collaboration with the American Oncology Institute, represents a significant initiative by the group that is anticipated to transform the healthcare landscape within the region substantially. Situated on a 4-acre site in the suburbs of Imphal East, the hospital has been operational since 2019. A multispecialty hospital, BABINA Hospital, with 200 beds, was established in August 2024. All these establishments provide accessible healthcare facilities to the people of Manipur and neighbouring states.

 

Hospitality and other allied activities

The establishment of a 3-star hotel, The Classic Hotel, in the state aimed to capitalise on the untapped tourism potential of the beautiful state of Manipur. The shortage of quality hotels had long deterred tourists, but with The Classic Hotel, operational since 2009, visitors can enjoy world-class, modern hospitality services. The fact that The Classic Hotel has become the preferred choice for most tourists and officials visiting the state attests to its exceptional services. It will boost the tourism industry and bring long-term economic benefits to the entire region.

Hotel Imphal by The Classic is managed under a PPP model by The Classic Group of Hotels, after it was given a facelift from the former state-run Hotel Imphal. With its expansive campus, the hotel is regarded as one of the best in Imphal and remains a favourite among visitors. Initially operated under a trial PPP model, the hotel’s performance clearly reflects the success of this joint venture.

Sendra Park and Resort by The Classic is another project under the PPP model, and its success demonstrates the potential of such joint ventures in other tourism initiatives. The Classic Hospitality Training Institute is a leading hospitality training centre in Manipur. The institute offers courses designed to equip individuals to meet industry standards and enhance their employability. Certified by the Sector Skill Councils, the institute provides certificate and diploma courses in hospitality operations, food preparation, and culinary arts.

The Classic Grande, with its 171 rooms, is the newest addition in 2015 to the Classic Group of Hotels, offering world-class service for various types of visitors. A 4-star hotel, Classic Grande, reflects the warm and rich cultural heritage of Manipur. It has been a member of Radisson Individuals since April 2021.
